‘Move with MADD’ 5K run to help end impaired driving

Mothers Against Drunk Driving California is set to rally against the growing crisis of impaired driving as it hosts the annual 5K fundraiser, now called Move with MADD, from Sept. 13 to Nov. 8 throughout California.

The long-standing fundraiser has a new name, Move With MADD, reflecting MADD’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility by encouraging various forms of movement. This change allows more people to participate and support our mission, regardless of their physical abilities.

The shift is a modern and dynamic approach to encouraging more creative and diverse activities. It opens up opportunities for new types of events and partnerships, keeping the mission fresh and engaging.

With impaired driving fatalities surging 33 percent since 2019, while in 2023, 1,355 people were killed in alcohol-involved (BAC .08+) crashes in California. This community-driven event serves as a powerful call to action. It unites neighbors, families, and advocates in a shared mission: to protect lives, raise awareness, and pave the way for safer roads and a brighter future.

“Someone is killed or injured in an impaired driving crash every 85 seconds,” said Patricia Rillera, MADD California State Executive Director. “Move With MADD generates vital resources that enable us to provide victims and their loved ones with free emotional support, assist them in navigating the criminal and civil justice systems, and continue our lifesaving advocacy for safer roads and communities. The larger our turnout, the stronger our message that impaired driving has no place on California’s roads.”

Move With MADD sponsors, walkers, and donors fuel a nationwide movement to honor lives lost to impaired driving, support survivors — some of whom can no longer walk, and others who are learning to walk again — and drive progress in prevention efforts. F

Funds raised during the Move With MADD will support
Victim Services
MADD provides free, 24/7 emotional support and guidance to victims and survivors of impaired driving. MADD’s trained advocates assist with legal processes, crime victim compensation, court accompaniment, and more.

Education and prevention
MADD offers educational programs in schools, workplaces and communities to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving and promote responsible choices. Through youth-focused initiatives and community outreach, MADD encourages a culture of safety on the roads.

Law enforcement partnerships
MADD collaborates with law enforcement on high-visibility enforcement campaigns, such as sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, to deter impaired driving and ensure law enforcement is equipped with the latest tools and strategies to protect communities from impaired drivers.

Advocacy and innovation
MADD pushes for stronger laws and proactive solutions to end impaired driving — like the HALT Drunk Driving Law — which requires lifesaving anti-drunk driving technology in all new vehicles to end this crime.

The Move With MADD events in California are part of dozens of races taking place across the country this year.

Data from previous years underscores the power of this movement: In 2024, Move With MADD events in 87 communities united more than 13,000 walkers and more than 1,200 MADD volunteers and staff, raising nearly $4 million. Walkers themselves contributed more than $3 million, while sponsors added over $900,000 to support MADD’s lifesaving mission.
