National Weather Service issues wind advisory/red flag warnings for Lassen County tomorrow

Wind Advisory
The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory at 12:36 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 1, for Lassen, eastern Plumas and eastern Sierra counties including the cities of Susanville, Portola, Loyalton, Westwood and Sierraville from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2 due to expected southwest winds of 10 to 20 miles-per-hour with gusts up to 35 mph at Stampede Reservoir, Lake Davis, Antelope Lake and Eagle Lake.

Impacts
Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

Precautionary preparedness actions
Check lake conditions before heading out and be prepared for a sudden increase in winds and wave heights. Consider postponing boating activities on the lake until a day with less wind.

Red Flag Warning
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low humidity, which is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

The affected areas include Surprise Valley, eastern Lassen County, the Northern Sierra Front including Carson City, Douglas, Storey, southern Washoe, western Lyon, and far southern Lassen counties, the West Humboldt Basin in Pershing County and Northern Washoe County.

Forecasters expect southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts of 30 to 40 mph and humidity between 9 and 15 percent.

Impacts
The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them.

Precautionary preparedness actions
Avoid outdoor activities that can cause a spark near dry vegetation, such as yard work, target shooting, or campfires.
