Regional fires update

Here’s an update on the fires burning in our area.

3-1 Pit Fire
According to CalFire, the 3-1 Pit Fire, burning near Little Valley Road and Wilson Springs Road, southeast of McArthur, has blackened 1,055 acres and is 90 percent contained.

As of 8:37 a.m. July 14, CalFire reports fire personnel continue to strengthen and improve control lines around the 3-1 Pit Fire. Crews are locating and extinguishing scattered interior hot spots while continuing mop-up operations to further secure the fire.

Personnel and heavy equipment are also conducting fire suppression repair to minimize impacts from suppression activities and restore affected areas where appropriate.

Thunderstorms continue to move through the area, bringing the potential for lightning. Overnight rainfall created favorable conditions for suppression efforts, allowing firefighters to make continued progress in strengthening containment lines and extinguishing remaining heat.

Loomis Fire
According to CalFire, the Loomis Fire, burning in the Dixie Valley, has blackened 656 acres and is 25 percent contained.

At 8:40 a.m. July 14 CalFire reported fire personnel continue to make steady progress on the Loomis Fire. Crews are actively locating and extinguishing hot spots within the fire perimeter while continuing mop-up operations to eliminate any remaining heat.

Firefighters are also strengthening and improving control lines around the fire’s perimeter to further secure the incident and increase containment.

Thunderstorms continue to move through the area, bringing the potential for lightning.

Elephant Fire
According to CalFire, the Elephant Fire has consumed 12, 303 acres and is only 5 percent contained.

Evacuation warnings
Potential threat to life and/or property. Those who require additional time to evacuate, and those with pets and livestock should leave now.

At 9:18 a.m. July 14, CalFire reported Evacuation orders have been dropped from the Elephant Fire. Evacuation warnings remain in place.

Twain Fire
According to a statement from Plums National Forest, the Twain Fire is burning east of Twain north of Highway 70 on the Plumas National Forest.

Very little rain fell on the Twain Fire overnight but cool conditions continue to give firefighters an edge gaining containment in the steep terrain and heavy vegetation. The fire remains at 276 acres and 35 percent contained this morning. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

An increased chance of thunderstorms is in the forecast for today, and with them increased gusty, erratic winds. The Twain Fire is burning within the Dixie Fire scar and crews working on the hill will maintain heightened awareness for potentially failing dead trees.

Smoke conditions have mitigated considerably in the canyon and air quality has improved. Current air quality conditions are available at airnow.gov/

Resources are assigned 24 hours a day on the Twain Fire and controlled traffic is still in place on Highway 70 in the fire area for their protection.
