Susanville man arrested on arson charges following Limoneria Avenue apartment fire

A Susanville man is in custody on arson charges for starting a fire in his apartment on Limoneria Avenue last week.

Matthew Davis, a resident at the Parkview Garden Apartments, admitted starting the fire, and he was arrested and booked into the Lassen County Jail on arson charges.

According to a statement from the Susanville Fire Department, about 5:32 p.m. Thursday, June 13, the Susanville Interagency Dispatch Center dispatched the Susanville Fire Department to a reported multi-family structure fire at the Parkview Garden Apartments, 320 Limoneria Ave., Building D.

SIFC advised that it was unknown if everyone was out of the building including two disabled tenants.

Susanville City Truck 1 arrived on scene and encountered heavy smoke coming from an upstairs apartment. Firefighters made entry into Building D and confirmed one apartment was on fire with unknown occupant status and that the occupants of the other seven apartments were out of the building.

Firefighters then advanced a hose line upstairs and made entry into the apartment on fire. The firefighters were met with heavy smoke and high heat. They made an aggressive attack on the fire and advanced the hose line down the hallway extinguishing fire in the kitchen and both bedrooms. A primary search of the apartment revealed the occupant had made it out safely. Once the fire was extinguished, fire crews from the SFD and CalFire overhauled the apartment looking for hazards and hidden fires. Fans were set up to clear the building of smoke.

Due to the aggressive fire attack, the damage was limited to minor smoke damage in six apartments, water damage to the apartment under the fire, and fire/water damage to the apartment of origin. Occupants were allowed to return to the minor smoke-damaged apartments.

Once the overhaul was completed, a fire investigation began. Members of the SFD and Susanville Police Department interviewed Matthew Davis, the occupant of the burned apartment, and he confessed to starting the fire. Davis was placed under arrest and booked into the Lassen County Jail on arson charges.

There were no civilian injuries and no firefighter injuries. The Susanville Fire Department was supported by CalFire, the Susan River Fire Protection District, the city of Susanville Gas Department, the Lassen Municipal Utility District and the SPD.
