Susanville Planning Commission meets tonight — may find a public nuisance at the bowling alley
Is there a future for the bowling alley on Main Street?
The Susanville Planning Commission holds a public hearing at 5:30 p.m. tonight at the City Council Chambers, 66 N. Lassen St., to consider declaring a public nuisance and approving an abatement order the nuisance be abated.
Firefighters battle the blaze at the bowling alley in December 2016.According to the staff report for the meetings’ agenda, “The building located at 2772 Main Street has been declared substandard and in violation of California Health and Safety Code 17920.3 since December 2016. The Susanville Police Department has received 19 calls for service at the property in 2024; 58 in total since January 2021. The Susanville Fire Department has received 14 calls for service in the past 11 months. On July 30, 2024, a Notification of Nuisance was mailed and e-mailed to the property owner requesting compliance by Sept. 1, 2024. The property owner called in response to the e-mail and stated he has no intentions of demolishing the building but intends to rent/lease the building, and his attorney would be representing him in further proceedings with the city.”

Bowling alley fire still under investigation
A cold evening blaze lit up the sky and shut down traffic on Main Street in Susanville.
At about 7:20 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, local fire agencies were dispatched to the Susanville Bowling Alley, 2772 Main St., for a commercial structure fire.
According to a statement from the Susanville Fire Department, when the first engine arrived, smoke and fire were observed coming from the roof.
An aggressive coordinated attack from the roof contained the flames at about 7:42 p.m. and extensive salvage and overhaul operations were performed.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The Susan River Fire Protection District, Cal Fire, California Correctional Center firefighters, Susanville Police Department, Susanville City Public Works, CHP, Cal OES Air 1, Lassen County Sheriff’s Office, Janesville Fire Protection District and Sierra Army Depot Fire Department offered assistances during the blaze.
The SPC’s next regularly scheduled meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 26.
