“Susanville resident Steven Stump spotted an extremely rare bird on Tuesday: The Lesser Black-backed Gull,” according to Smith. “This is only the second official sighting of this species in Lassen County.

“Steve has already distinguished himself as an accomplished birder in Lassen County, seeing the highest number of birds in one year and reporting other first and second time sightings. He moderates local bird sightings on Ebird, and he is highly respected for his bird knowledge. His sighting of the Lesser Black-backed Gull was verified by three other bird enthusiasts.
