Susanville City Manager Dan Newton offered a brief update on the status of the St. Francis Hotel at the city council’s Dec. 18 meeting.

Newton said the Susanville Planning Commission approved an abatement order to the owner for the abatement and clean-up of the burned out building site at its Dec. 10 meeting.

“The property owner has 20 days to appeal that decision,” Newton said. “If there’s no action taken on the 30th December, the city could then move forward with the abatement using our own resources and forces with the goal of recovering of the cost of that.”

Newton said the city would have to determine if hazardous materials are present, profile the waste stream for the dump and then bid out that work.

“We won’t know what the cost will be until we get a little further along in that process,” Newton said.
He said the city has a plan to remove the K-rail next week in order to reopen the closed lane on Main Street (Highway 36), but the sidewalk would remain closed due to the safety hazard the building still poses.
