Condemned inmate Darryl T. Kemp died at California Medical Facility on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024. He was 88 years old.
At 9:45 p.m., was pronounced deceased by a registered nurse in the hospice unit, who determined the initial cause of death to be natural.
Kemp was most recently sentenced by Contra Costa County on July 7, 2009, and placed on condemned status.
He was convicted of first-degree murder for killing a woman Nov. 14, 1978, at a reservoir in Lafayette. DNA linked him to the long-unsolved slaying.
Prior to this event, Kemp was a convicted murderer. His first death sentence for first-degree murder had been commuted when the death penalty was declared unconstitutional in 1972.
Kemp was received Feb. 16, 1960, sentenced to death for first-degree murder. His sentence was modified to life with the possibility of parole on Jan. 14, 1974.
He was released to parole supervision on July 23, 1978, after serving his full sentence as defined by law. He was discharged from parole Jan. 29, 1981, at the statutory maximum.
