Honey Lake Valley Recreation Authority holds Aug. 27 public workshop to discuss future pool finances, operation

With the end of city and the county’s 10-year funding for the pool on the horizon, the Honey Lake Valley Recreation Authority plans a special meeting workshop at 3:30 pm. Thursday, Aug. 27 to brainstorm with the public and address the options to keep the pool open without that financial support.

All aspects of the pool operation are on the table for discussion including the budget, fees and scheduling.

“We’re not going to please everybody,” said President Mike Scanlan. “It’s a very challenging thing. You want to do the best you can.”

Public member Nick McBride said, “We need to have that workshop, and figure out the state of the pool and where we’re at.”

Boardmember Tom Neely said the staff is trying to be very conscious of the budget, and if the city and the county don’t continue their financial support, “this pool is not going to be around. Guaranteed.”

“We have to do it quick,” said boardmember  Dawn Miller.

Scanlan said he supported a workshop, but he wasn’t sure how that would work with the constraints of California’s Open Meeting Law, the Brown Act.

It was suggested could hold the workshop and then appoint an ad-hoc committee to work on the suggestions that arise during the workshop. An ad-hoc committee would not be subject to the Brown Act because it does not include a quorum of the board.

By a 4-0-1 vote, the board approved the minutes of the July 21 meeting. Miller recused herself because she was not a boardmember during that meeting.

Scanlan will continue to serve as president of the board.

The board received and filed financial reports and heard an update for the executive officer.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting will be held at 4 p.m. Sept. 15.
