In flip-flop, Trump threatens to defy court order requiring his administration to fund SNAP
Joel Berg, CEO of Hunger Free America, one of the nation’s leading anti-hunger organizations, just issued the following statement.
“At least twice in the last two weeks, President Trump has contradicted his own USDA by stating he would continue funding SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans during the shutdown, despite USDA saying the complete opposite. But now that two federal courts have ordered USDA to immediately fund SNAP, and Trump’s DOJ and USDA have said the government will comply, Trump has posted a threat on Truth Social to defy the court orders and withhold SNAP payments, yet again contradicting his own government.
“President Trump’s incoherent flip-flopping on SNAP payments – now threatening to violate two different federal court orders – is both lawless and heartless. Forty-two million American low-paid workers, children, active-duty military families, older Americans, people with disabilities and veterans rely on SNAP to fill their grocery carts. Trump should stop playing politics with their lives and start following the law – by funding full SNAP benefits immediately.”
