Inmate who walked away from Sugar Pine Conservation Camp apprehended

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation officials announced a minimum-security inmate who walked away from Sugar Pine Conservation Camp in Shasta County on March 25, was apprehended today.

At approximately 7:15 a.m., Joseph Stewart, 31, was apprehended without incident by Sugar Pine Conservation Camp staff in the city of Redding.

He is being transported to the Sierra Conservation Center where he will be returned to CDCR custody. His case will be referred to the Shasta County District Attorney for possible escape charges.

Stewart was received from Marin County on June 21, 2023, to serve a10-year sentence for second-degree robbery.

Since 1977, 99 percent of all people who have left an adult institution, camp, or community-based program without permission have been apprehended.
