For several days, LassenNews has been asking Lassen County Sheriff John McGarva for information regarding social media posts alleging cattle rustling in northern Lassen County.
McGarva said he hadn’t heard of it.
But this morning when LassenNews sent McGarva information about a post made yesterday of a Texas rancher asking for the public’s help regarding the cows being stolen near Bieber in the North County, the sheriff had a specific allegation he could investigate. And he did.
“This was reported to the livestock investigator at USDA over a year ago,” McGarva said. “We talked to the property owner. It’s an old deal. We’re going to follow up and make sure things are being take care of, but apparently they (USDA) just saw the video, too. They’re just as surprised as anyone else that there’s a video.”
The sheriff also said his office recently took a report about a rustling incident near Herlong, and that information was turned over the USDA inspector’s office.
“They are in charge of that investigation,” McGarva said,
