Yesterday, State Senator Mike McGuire abstained during votes on the reconfirmation of five members of the California Board of Parole Hearings who were appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom and have sparked public outrage for releasing violent and serial sex offenders early. The board granted parole in February to David Funston, who is serving multiple life sentences for sex crimes against children.
“Nobody should be surprised that Mike would abstain on these votes,” said Assemblyman James Gallagher. “After all, why would he vote against parole board members who are using the law he helped create to let these predators out early? While these Newsom appointees have no business sitting on the parole board, the real problem is the pro-criminal laws that Mike McGuire voted to create. He refuses to vote against these sick individuals who released child predators. His votes have made our communities and schools less safe. It’s clear, Mike won’t stand up to Newsom because he handed him a gerrymandered Congressional District.”
