Megan Dahle reminds residents new 837 area code coming to the 530 region — existing numbers will not change

District 1 Assemblywoman Megan Dahle reminds residents the 530 area code region will soon be seeing a new 837 area code added as an overlay starting Jan. 31, 2025.

Megan Dahle.

Due to high demand for new telephone numbers in the 530 area, the California Public Utilities Commission approved the implementation of this new area code overlay in June 2023. Starting Jan. 31, 2025, new telephone numbers in the 530 region may be assigned an 837 area code. It’s important to note that existing telephone numbers will not change.

To prepare for this change, customers should continue to identify their phone number as a 10-digit number (area code + telephone number) and update all relevant materials and devices accordingly. This includes business stationery, advertising materials, contact lists, and automated dialing equipment.

Key facts to remember

  • Telephone numbers, including the current area code, will not change.
  • The cost of calls, coverage area, and other rates and services will remain the same.
  • Local calls will still be local calls.
  • Customers will dial 1+10 digits for local and long-distance calls within and between the overlay area codes.
  • Three-digit dialing for emergency and informational services (e.g., 911, 988) will not change.

The 530 area code serves a large portion of northeastern California, covering counties such as Lassen, Butte, El Dorado, Shasta and more. Communities in this area include Chico, Davis, Redding, South Lake Tahoe and Yuba City.
