In 1959, the Spencer Memorial Scholarship, which is named in honor of Monticola’s founder, Lucy Philenda Spencer and her two daughters, Iva Raker and Judge Gladys Burroughs, was first awarded.

This is now a $500 scholarship. Graduate applicants must have attended local high schools for at least three years, have a GPA of 3.0 or above and plan to enroll in an accredited two- or four-year college or university. Academic success, leadership ability and community service are the qualities the selection committee is reviewing.

The Monticola Memorial Scholarship was first awarded in 1974, and is in honor of all the club’s deceased members. This $500 scholarship has the same criteria as the Spencer Memorial Scholarship.

A $500 Vocational Scholarship is awarded to a local high school graduate who plans to attend an accredited vocational school or college. During the last three years, the GPA must be 2.0 or better. The applicant must show evidence of aptitude and interest in a vocational career, exhibit traits of dependability, initiative and the ability to get along with others.

Full details on each scholarship are available at the Lassen High School Counseling office.

The Etta Tarry Memorial Scholarship was named in honor of club member Etta Tarry who loaned the club $10,000 to help finance the building of the clubhouse on South Lassen Street. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a Lassen College student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and continuing their education at an accredited four-year college or university. The selection committee is looking for students who show academic success, leadership ability and community service.

Full details on this scholarship are available at the Lassen College Financial Aid office and the deadline for applications is March 31, 2026.

Each year we are pleasantly impressed with the incredibly talented and accomplished students who apply for these scholarships and it is extremely difficult to choose from among them.
