Mr. President — time has come today

When I worked for Mike Taborski, the publisher of the Lassen County Times (and the best boss I ever had), he established a policy of not endorsing political candidates. I have continued that policy with lassennews.com. So, I guess this is kind of an anti-endorsement.

I don’t know what I write on our small news website here in the northeastern corner of California will have much impact on the national scene or at the White House, but I must lend my voice to join the growing cascade of calls for President Joe Biden to step aside.

I am not a partisan person. In my voting life I have cast my ballots for both Republicans and Democrats and even a few independents. I am not a Joe Biden fan. I am not a Donald Trump fan, either. And I certainly am not a Kamala Harris fan. My decision to take this stand is not based on partisan, tribal politics.

I am not a doctor, but my stepfather and his father both were afflicted with Parkinson’s, and I can’t escape my suspicion the president also suffers that condition. I’ve seen it for myself — the shuffling gate, the tongued-tied speech — this debilitating disease is progressive. It only gets worse.

I’ll spare you all the indignities my stepfather suffered the final decade of his life. My sister, who cared for him, said his brilliant intellect remained completely intact despite his eventual inability to walk, talk or even feed himself. Dr.Dave, may you rest in peace. Thankfully, all your trials are over.

With all respect, Mr. President, it’s time for you to step aside, end your campaign and let an alternative candidate rise. There is no disgrace in battling a health issue.

It’s time for us to thank you for your lifetime of service to our great nation. It’s time for you to retire gracefully.

I know this is a painful and harsh request from a little guy like me in the provinces, but it’s a great opportunity for you to do what’s best for our nation.

Mr. President, time has come today.
