Salvation Army seeks families who need holiday food boxes, Angel Tree gifts

The frost isn’t quite on the pumpkin yet, but the folks at the Salvation Army in Susanville already are preparing for their annual mission to feed needy families during the holidays and make sure every youngster receives gifts at Christmas.

While the Salvation Army always accepts donations to help with these efforts, right now the nonprofit agency wants to identify those in need of these services this holiday season.

According to a Facebook post, “If you are planning to receive Thanksgiving and/or Christmas Food boxes and/or participate in the Angel Tree gift program for the children, you do not want to procrastinate. The spots are filling in very quickly – we are already more than 25 percent to capacity.”

“We’re taking applications right now and we’re already a little over one-quarter capacity,” said coordinator Carla McDonald. For the Thanksgiving or Christmas Food Box, they get a choice of turkey, ham or turkey breast and a full food box that goes with that. They decide what date and time they want to come pick it up. The application is also for our Angel Tree program for the kids in the family who receive something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read. We make the Angel Tree tags off of that, and we’re ready to roll for Christmas.”

To make things simpler this year, participants no longer have to stop by the Salvation Army office on Main Street to sign up — although that option is still available. Everything can be handled electronically. Simply click this link https://na4.documents.adobe.com/public/esignWidget and make sure you get your application submitted as soon as possible.

“It’s all done electronically so there’s no form to fill out manually,” McDonald said. “If someone has a hard time with that, they’re welcome to bring in their ID and proof of income to me at the office and I will help them fill that out online.”
