September is National Preparedness Month: Red Cross urges families to take four steps to be ready

September is National Preparedness Month, and the American Red Cross is encouraging families to take action now to protect their loved ones before disaster strikes. Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time — from wildfires and floods to home fires and power outages — but a few simple steps can make all the difference.

“Preparedness doesn’t have to feel overwhelming,” said Bridget Posson, Executive Director for the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter. “We’re asking Nevadans to take just four easy steps this month. By taking time now, families can reduce stress and stay safer when the unexpected happens.”

Four ways to get ready
Know your risks

Understand the disasters most likely to affect your area. Families should be ready for earthquakes, wildfires, floods and severe winter storms. Knowing what could happen helps families plan smarter and respond faster.

Make a plan
Families should talk about what to do if separated during an emergency. Choose a safe place to meet, know how to reach one another and write down important contacts, medical providers and insurance information.

Build a kit
Gather food, water and supplies before disaster strikes. Create a “go-kit” with three days’ worth of essentials that can be grabbed quickly, and a “stay-at-home kit” with at least two weeks’ of supplies, including medications and important documents. For more information on building a complete emergency kit, visit redcross.org/kit.

Get involved
Learn lifesaving skills like first aid and CPR, become a Red Cross volunteer or consider donating blood to help patients in need. “Emergencies often stretch local resources,” said Posson. “The more prepared we are as individuals, the stronger we are as communities.”

Emergency information at your fingertips
Be better prepared for emergencies by downloading the free Red Cross apps. The Emergency app provides live weather updates, shelter locations and expert disaster advice, while the First Aid app offers step-by-step guidance for injuries, including lifesaving CPR instructions.

About National Preparedness Month
National Preparedness Month, established in 2004, was created in response to the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. Recognizing the critical importance of emergency preparedness, the Federal Emergency Management Agency partnered with organizations like the American Red Cross to launch this annual campaign, aimed at promoting readiness and resilience across the nation.
