Sportsmen’s Club announces ‘low water’ change to Junior Fishing Derby

The 34th annual Junior Fishing Derby, set for Saturday, Sept. 30, may be only 10 days away, but according to a statement from Lassen Sportsmen’s Club President Wade Workman, the Piute Creek water level is too low to plant fish. Younger anglers usually fish Piute Creek instead of the Susan River during the derby.

“I met with Toby Beach (City of Susanville Parks and Recreation) at Memorial Park on Monday,” Workman said. “We determined the water level in Piute Creek was too low to plant fish. This will alter our plant routine slightly by eliminating the stop at the park and starting the plant on the Susan River adjacent to Pat Murphy Little League Park then working our way west to Hobo Camp.  The river is low, down to 4 feet at the Lassen Bridge gauge station. We will need to concentrate on planting at and directly upstream of the known “holes” in the river.”
