Supes to discuss Animal Shelter concerns at Feb. 24 meeting

Lassen County District 5 Supervisor Jason Ingram has a new mission to help the animals at the Lassen County Animal Shelter.

Earlier today, Ingram confirmed a Facebook poster’s question — he got the Lassen County Animal Shelter matter placed on the agenda for the board’s Tuesday, Feb. 24 meeting so the issues can be publicly discussed by the board and the community.

He told LassenNews.com. he toured the highly rated Palm Springs Animal Shelter during a recent trip to Southern California. He said more than 20 volunteers worked the floor during his visit. He also said they told him they had 400 fosters in their foster program — fosters who care for the animals at their homes until they are adopted. And they told him they do a lot of fundraising for the animals as well.

“What we’re after is, we’re just trying to get a good crew of volunteers and hopefully develop a foster program,” Ingram said. “If other counties can do all this, we should be able to do the same.”

He said he wants the county to figure out what it can do regarding volunteers, fosters and fundraising.

He said he’s heard the shelter in Quincy may have a good program to follow, so he will be looking into that one, too.

“I figured I would gather success stories from successful shelters and try to implement their ideas here,” Ingram said.

According to a Facebook post, “The Lassen Animal Shelter is finally on the County Board of Supervisors docket for Feb. 24.

“Jason Ingram has sponsored the agenda item for us. Public comment time is at 9:30. a.m.  We will not know if a separate time slot will be allocated for this issue until Feb. 20. I will keep everyone updated.

“The goal of this meeting is to bring attention to ways to help improve the shelter and give the animals a better chance of being adopted to the supervisors. The main focus will be getting the county to start their own volunteer and foster program, adjust the hours to include weekends and fundraising efforts to help alleviate budget constraints.

“I am asking the public to please attend this meeting. We need to make a show of people willing to volunteer and foster so the board knows there is a demand for this. Please bring your ideas forward, but be mindful of time. I am hopeful we will have a large turnout and everyone can speak. Thank you to everyone for being so supportive of this issue.”
