Time to get ready for the 36th annual Junior Fishing Derby
OK, all you young fisherfolk — the 36th annual Junior Fishing Derby will be here before you know it!

The annual event held on Piute Creek and the Susan River, sponsored by the Lassen Sportsmen’s Club and co-sponsored by the city of Susanville, Lassen County and the Susanville Indian Rancheria, will be held Saturday, May 17 (or Saturday, Aug. 2, conditions permitting).
The free event is open to children between the ages of 2 and 15. The first 300 to register will receive a souvenir Derby Hat courtesy of Guess Plumbing.

Schedule
Note
Derby participants should be off the river no later than 2:45 p.m. and in line at check-in by 3 p.m. to qualify for prizes.

Registration
Registration begins at 5:30 a.m. and ends at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 17 at Memorial Park. Rods are available to check out.

Free breakfast for all kids
From 6 to 8 a.m. a free breakfast, sponsored by Walmart and Walmart employees, is available for all kids. Adults may have breakfast for a donation of $2.

Free lunch for all kids
From 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. a free lunch, sponsored by Frosty Mill, Susanville Supermarket, Alpine Beverage, Burger King, Diamond Mountain Mini mart and Grillin’ by Greg Sella, is available for all kids. Adults may have lunch for a donation of $2.

Derby Prizes
Derby prizes will be awarded after the 3 p.m. close of the Derby at Memorial Park. Winners need not be present to win. Door prizes will be drawn at the same time and winners need to be present to win,

Ages 6 to 15 — Largest Fish (boys and girls)
First place — bicycles from Susanville Grocery Outlet; Second place — rods and reels from Western Nevada Supply. Third place — tackle boxes from Lassen County Federal Credit Union.

Ages 2 to 5 Largest Fish (boys and girls)
First place — bicycles from Zaengle’s Home and Carpet. Second place — rods and reels from Western Nevada Supply. Third place — tackle boxes from Lassen County Federal Credit Union.

Sportsmanship Award
Ages 2 to 5 from the Dieter Family.
Ages 6 to 15 from Bill Kauffman.

Special Prize
A special prize will be awarded for the largest fish caught by a 156-year-old— a fly rod, reel and line built by Elegant Iris and the Men’s Den courtesy of Katie Anderson.
