Publisher’s note: This story originally appeared in the Tuesday, April 30, 2013, edition of the Lassen County Times.

Participants of the Plumas Audubon Society’s previous excursion to the Honey Lake State Game Refuge rest at the Laughlin Campground.

The Plumas Audubon Society is hosting a bird-watching trip to Eagle Lake. Those interested in attending will meet at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 11 in the Susanville Supermarket parking lot in front of the mural. The trip is part of an effort to re-establish a chapter of the Audubon Society to serve Lassen County and Northeastern California.

From Susanville, the group will carpool to Eagle Lake with several stops along the way including Willow Creek Valley, Antelope Pass and along the east shore of the lake. After a rest stop at the North Eagle Lake Campground, the group will proceed around the west shore of the lake.

The group will be on the lookout for a variety of birds that can be found at Eagle Lake including the American white pelican, forster’s tern, bald and golden eagles, prairie falcon, northern harrier, American kestrel, black-necked stilt, osprey, eared grebe and western and Clark’s grebes.

Plumas Audubon has been monitoring western and Clark’s grebe populations on Eagle Lake for the past three years and on this trip the group will look for the grebes from numerous observation points. It will also be sharing information on what recent studies have revealed about these charismatic birds. The birding tour will end at the mouth of Pine Creek near Spaulding where the group will explore the meandering creek channel near the lake.

Those who are interested in becoming involved with a Lassen County chapter of the Audubon Society are invited to participate in an organizational meeting at the Aparuge Lookout, a private rental located near the mouth of Pine Creek in Spaulding, which will take place after the field trip. The group will select a president, secretary, treasurer and membership coordinator at the meeting to serve on the board of the Lassen Audubon Society. Appetizers and drinks will be served.

You’re invited to join this exciting day-trip and to consider helping make the Lassen Audubon Society a successful organization to benefit the region.
