Tuesday, July 28, 2009 • Chester Helitack Crew member dies after routine training exercise

Firefighter Thomas Marovich died while performing routine rappelling proficiency skill training, at the Backbone Helibase in Willow Creek on Tuesday, July 21.

According to a press release from the U.S. Forest Service, Marovich, from Hayward California, was a second-year apprentice with the Forest Service at the Modoc National Forest and was working with the Chester Helitack Crew from the Lassen National Forest which was assigned to the Backbone Fire at the time of the accident.

Marovich fell 200 feet at 10:10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 21, while performing the required training, which is conducted a minimum of every 14 days.

Marovich was provided advanced life support treatment immediately at the scene. Backbone Helibase medical staff, the Humboldt County Coroner’s Office and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office were also involved in the medical response.

According to the press release, the Forest service has mobilized an accident investigation team and is currently working with the National Transportation Safety Board.

A separate press release from inciweb.org said Backbone fire personnel had a small memorial in tribute to Marovich’s life at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 22.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also released a statement on Wednesday, July 22 in regards to Marovich’s death.

“Maria and I join all Californians in expressing our deep sadness over the passing of … Marovich,” Schwarzenegger said. “Thomas selflessly dedicated his life to protecting our communities and saving lives, and we are forever indebted to his service. Our hearts go out to Thomas’ family, friends and fellow firefighters as they mourn this terrible loss.”

In honor of Marovich, flags were flown at half-staff at fire stations throughout the state, as well as capitol flags in Sacramento.
