‘We need to replace out-of-touch politicians with forward-thinking visionaries’

I am writing to express my deep concern over the recent fire that destroyed the iconic Saint Francis building in Susanville, California, a landmark that has stood as a testament to our community’s history and culture.

This tragic event has brought into sharp focus the significant shortcomings in the city of Susanville and Lassen County’s approach to preserving and fostering local businesses and infrastructure.

While the response to the fire was commendably brave and fast, it serves as a stark reminder of the gaps in our long-term planning and maintenance strategies. The failure to sustain an economy robust enough to support and preserve such historical structures is glaring. Furthermore, the lack of proactive measures to abate nuisances and safeguard these properties highlights the city and county governments’ negligence in their stewardship roles.

The Saint Francis was not just an architectural gem; it was a symbol of potential economic vitality. A new owner was ready to pour money into the building’s repurposing. Its loss reflects a broader issue — the inadequate prioritization of business preservation and economic development in Lassen County. We must question whether our current leaders possess the vision needed to cultivate a thriving business environment, one that attracts and retains entrepreneurs and investors alike.

To foster a more opportunity-driven community, we need to replace out-of-touch politicians with forward-thinking visionaries who can develop an economic infrastructure that benefits all citizens. This includes implementing strategies to support local businesses, such as offering tax incentives, grants, and zero interest loans for restoration projects, creating business improvement districts, reimaging Susanville’s Main Street so it is more conducive to business and actively seeking partnerships with private sectors to invest in our local economy.

It is imperative that we learn from this loss and act decisively to prevent future tragedies. And make no mistake, more historic and unique buildings will continue to be lost. Our community deserves leaders who are not only responsive but initiative-taking individuals who understand the importance of a vibrant local economy and are committed to making it a reality.

I urge my fellow citizens to demand accountability from our elected officials and to vote out those who are currently failing to look to the future. We need advocates for policies that will secure a prosperous future for Lassen County. Not the same old go along to get along types. Together, let us build a community where history is preserved, businesses are nurtured and opportunities abound for everyone.
